Daily Brief: How to let existing security tools allow or deny Claude prompts and tool calls before they run
November 8, 2026
Turn on Claude Enterprise inference hooks so your security tools can allow or deny prompts and tool calls before Claude runs them. Anthropic says prompt hooks and pre-tool-call hooks are generally available; a denied request never reaches the model. Sources: Anthropic’s security update and Inference hooks overview below.
Steps
- Confirm Enterprise access and who will host the check. Anthropic’s security update says inference hooks connect Claude to the data security tools your organization already uses, so written policies can apply to prompts and tool calls. The Help Center says hooks are generally available on Enterprise plans, cover Claude, Claude Code, Cowork, and other Claude Enterprise products, and are managed by Owners and Primary Owners in Organization settings. Choose whether your team or a vendor will host the HTTPS server that returns allow or deny. (Anthropic, Claude Help Center)
- Start in shadow mode and choose failure handling. Documentation lets you observe verdicts without blocking (shadow mode), inspect a percentage of requests, and exempt chosen roles. If the server is down, errors, or misses the 5-second default timeout, your setting either blocks the request or lets it through uninspected. Repeated failures trip a circuit breaker until the server recovers. Test fail-closed before organization-wide enforcement. (Claude Docs)
- Turn on prompt hooks, then validate tool calls. Prompt hooks send each governed prompt to your server before generation. Pre-tool-call hooks check tool calls from skills, plugins, and connected tools before they run, when Validate tool calls is on. The check happens inside Claude’s infrastructure, not on employee devices. A denied request never reaches the model; users see your deny reason plus a standing admin note, and each denial is logged in the Activity Feed.
- Explain how to continue after a block, and what is not inspected. A blocked message on claude.ai stays in the conversation, so later messages keep getting denied until someone edits or removes the denied content, or starts a new chat. Claude Code uses
/rewindor/clear; Cowork uses edit or New task. The server sees transcript text, tool calls and results, and extracted attachment text—not raw files, images, system prompts, or Anthropic-internal context. Screenshots of documents are not inspected. Hooks cannot rewrite or redact. - Know the gaps, and pair hooks with after-the-fact audit. Hooks are not available on Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud, and Claude Platform (API) organizations are out of scope. Voice mode does not send every tool call, so do not treat hooks as the only control there. Anthropic contrasts hooks (inline, before inference) with the Compliance API (after-the-fact audit and export).
Do not paste / human review
- Do not paste: secrets, API keys, customer PII, confidential client files, regulated data, HR records, or full contract text into public models—or into workplace assistants when your classification forbids it. Do not assume a screenshot of a document will be inspected.
- Human review: a named owner checks accuracy, citations, and fitness for purpose before the output is used, shared, acted on, or sent—and before any tool call that writes or sends outside draft. Review deny logs and shadow-mode verdicts with security before raising enforcement.
Safe-use checklist
- Confirm Claude Enterprise; an Owner or Primary Owner configures hooks in Organization settings (Anthropic).
- Point hooks at a server you or your vendor host; reuse existing policies.
- Start in shadow mode; set fail-closed versus fail-open; know the timeout and circuit breaker.
- Enable prompt hooks and Validate tool calls.
- Publish who to contact after a deny, and how to edit a blocked message.
- Do not rely on hooks for screenshots, raw files, voice mode, Bedrock, or Google Cloud.
- Pair hooks with the Compliance API for after-the-fact audit.
- Hub pages on this site are still forthcoming; use the Steps above until then.
